Radiant: the answer for Oubaai Hyatt Regency golf resort -
When choosing lighting solutions for the new five star Hyatt Regency golf resort at Oubaai in the Western Cape, project managers faced two major challenges common among establishments in coastal areas: the high salt content of the air which is highly corrosive, and with the power supply being a concern, the need to use energy efficient lamps.
Radiant was able to supply a range of products that were not only acceptable from a technical point of view, but that were aesthetically suited to the overall look and feel of the hotel. Radiant’s KH69 foot lights were used as low level lighting in the external gardens, retail and garden clusters. Radiant had recently added stainless steel external fittings to their product range, which were used for both general illumination and to illuminate signage and external room numbers. For up and down lighting, both indoors and out, Radiant provided a very versatile fitting that lent itself to easy modification to allow use with either Halogen or LED lamps.
Self-cleaning painting operated by nature -
Hospitality establishments now have access to self-cleaning exterior wall paint – a first in South Africa – thanks to Duram NanoTech, which uses advanced technology called nano to develop a dynamic, protective molecular layer on the paint. These self-cleaning, photocatalytic nano particles are continually energised by the sun’s UV rays, even on cloudy days, to loosen and decompose dirt, mildew, fungi, algae and pollution. The paint also includes a protective layer of ‘sunblock’ that is embedded in the paint, helping to preserve its vivid colour.
Unlike conventional paints that deteriorate over time, NanoTech’s active ingredient is continually working to ensure longer attractiveness of the building, years after exposure. In addition, the paint has an inbuilt hardness, is scrub resistant and requires low maintenance. Duram has designed a pure acrylic formulation with a smooth matt finish that resists fading and chalking, bridges hairline cracks and minor imperfections, and comes with an 8-year guarantee. As an environmentally-friendly product working with nature to self-clean, NanoTech is water-based, non-toxic, lead and heavy metal-free and contains no added harmful ingredients.
Bringing art to life -
Establishments, who are looking to offer their guests more a more interactive experience with artworks on display in their establishments, may find KWV’s recent initiative very interesting. The 10-month travelling exhibition is the brain child of art appraiser, Stephan Welz, and will feature 30 works by acclaimed South African artist, Cecil Skotnes. The collection is built around the 1977 piece Skotnes created especially for KWV, titled “The Origin Of Wine” which is based on one of the oldest stories of humankind, “The Epic of Gilgamesh”. This will be the first time a broad section of the general public will be able to view this remarkable wood-carved panel, which currently hangs in the Laborie Manor House.

Bed bugs - more dangerous than you thought! -
Even though there is no proven correlation between bed bugs and MRSA, a superbug that is resistant to most commonly used antibiotics, an alarming amount of people bitten by bed bugs end up in the hospital with severe infections, MRSA being one of them. Scientists in Canada studied five bedbugs taken from three patients treated at a hospital and concluded: “If bed bugs are capable of carrying and transmitting MRSA the way a mosquito spreads malaria, it could mean a whole new vector of human disease.”
Housekeepers will understand the serious of the matter given that:
MRSA can live for up to 7 months on dust
MRSA can live for up to 8 weeks on a mop head
MRSA can live for up to 9 weeks on cotton (towel)
MRSA can live for up to 203 days (over 6 months) on a blanket
MRSA can live on the skin of otherwise healthy individuals, with no symptoms, indefinitely
To curtail the contamination, a California company, Decon ProGreen, LLC has developed a protocol called: “bio hazards & bed bugs” using solutions that kill MRSA on contact as well as most bacteria, viruses, fungi and moulds. In laboratory tests, this solution has been proven highly efficient on exoskeleton bugs like bed bugs as well as their eggs. The protocol has been tested in hotel chains for over one year with 100% success. The products biodegradable and non-toxic, and are safe for humans, pets and plants.
Cleanliness is most important to consumers -
Ecolab Inc. launched its "Why Clean Matters” awareness campaign at the National Restaurant Association (NRA) Show in Chicago to share new research and insight about the impact cleanliness has on the performance of an establishment. Cleanliness tied with food taste as the most important attribute in choosing a restaurant, according to surveys of 13 000 restaurant consumers by Technomic, a leading foodservice research firm.
The surveys found that cleanliness consistently ranked as one of the most important attributes. Key insights included:
Cleanliness of tableware (dishes, glasses, silverware) consistently was ranked as the most important attribute to full service customers – with 93 percent saying it is their top attribute.
Interior cleanliness ranked as the second most important attribute, tying with food temperature in the 2010 survey responses.
There was a positive correlation between chains with the highest cleanliness ratings and loyalty factors such as “intent to return” and “recommend to others.”
Pestbiz 2011 -
A benchmark event for the South African pest control industry, the annual PestBiz Convention hosted by the South African Pest Control Association (SAPCA) will be held in Johannesburg at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre on 17 and 18 August.
Given the growing concern and demand for safer pest control methods and procedures, this year’s theme holds significant value for the food and safety industry. The theme “Preserving a healthy tomorrow” is based on the pest control industry becoming increasingly more aware of responsible practices in order to protect the environment and people. The programme boasts a record number of workshops and demonstrations, adding practical application to the more theoretical discussions. For more information, visit www.sapca.org.za.
Getting rid of unwanted guests -
When dealing with pests, it is advisable to contact a professional pest control company to assess the situation and to aid in eliminating the problem. A plan of action - to prevent unnecessary panic and to keep the situation under control - is essential. Rentokil offers the following foolproof tips to ensure that you stay in control, until the experts arrive.
Cockroaches - If cockroaches are spotted, remove all possible sources of food, water and potential shelter or habitat. Try to trap one so that it can be identified by your pest control technician when he arrives to inspect and deal with the infestation.
Rodents - Rodents must be dealt with quickly, since they can transmit diseases such as salmonella and contaminate or damage food or stored goods. Remove all food sources and clutter. Also seal openings that allow these pests to move into or around your building.
Flies - Flies are a nuisance and should be caught by an electronic fly killer unit fairly quickly. However, if there is a high degree of fly activity it could be because food debris has been allowed to gather, so thorough cleaning should be carried out. Also ensure that your waste management programme is adequate and implemented.
Performance while saving energy -
It is possible to keep get the laundry clean and lessen your carbon footprint at the same time. New technologies and innovations in washing and drying processes have resulted in further potential savings that are not only good for the bottom line, but good for the environment as well. Miele's W2859I Supertronic washing machines and tumble dryers offer the ultimate in laundry care excellence, and a means to support sustainable practices.
Miele’s washing machines require around 20% less electricity to wash a full load than is needed for an A energy efficiency rating. And even when their honeycomb drums aren’t fully loaded, Miele’s washing machines still put in an environmentally friendly performance - even half-loads still achieve an A label rating. The washing machine also boasts an energy-saving stand-by mode, which reduces its already impressively low running costs. Allowing for simple and fast interaction via an innovative touch screen display, it has achieved top marks in European comparison tests no less than three times. Decreasing the amount of detergent and softener you use is another way of being kind to the environment, while saving on laundry costs. Miele's W5968 LiquidWash uses automatic dispensing, which is selectable in all programmes, has clear economic and ecological benefits. Although tumble dryers have been considered as energy guzzlers, innovations in technology have made it possible to produce tumble dryers that are energy efficient. Heat-pump technology, for example, featured in Miele’s T8966WP Heat Pump Dryer, offers an A energy efficiency rating.
