Mashovhela Lodge sets new levels in eco-tourism
The recently built Venda-style Mashovhela Lodge, which means “place where the drums beat”, is located in the scenically beautiful Soutspansberg Mountains in the Limpopo Province. The lodge is raising the bar in eco-tourism. The lodge is detached entirely from Eskom’s power-grid and runs on alternative, renewable and sustainable energy. Hot water is heated by solar energy, supplemented by (eucalyptus) wood-fired boilers, and electricity is supplied via photovoltaic solar energy, supplemented by diesel generators. It is intended to eventually the diesel generators on bio-diesel and wood gas produced from combustible biomass.

Plaisir de Merle, a historic farm in the glorious Drakenstein area of Paarl, has revamped its tasting centre – once an old barn, built in 1823, adjoining the picturesque 18th-century homestead. It has a relaxed lounge atmosphere, where visitors can sample wines at their leisure, ensconced in comfy couches and fine surroundings.
Plaisir de Merle is open for tasting and wine sales from Mondays to Fridays from 09h00 to 17h00, and on Saturdays from 10h00 to 16h00 (November to March) and from 10h00 to 14h00 (April to October). Sundays are by appointment only for groups of ten to15 persons.

Topiary Wines launches its wine from elegant new tasting room
The vineyards of Franschhoek’s newest boutique cellar, Topiary Wines, are situated in the foothills of the Wemmershoek Mountains In three short years, owner Roy Andrews has converted La Tramontane farm into a model winery. Together with winemaker Chris Albrecht, and farm manager and viticulturist Malcolm Pemberton, Roy has rejuvenated the 17 hectares of vineyards, planted another three hectares, built a cellar, built a tasting room and nurtured two harvests through the cellar. The name Topiary was inspired by the numerous sculpted plants (the art of topiary is trimming bushes and hedges into decorative shapes) surrounding the new tasting room.
